Nicolau defeated Louis Smolka via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-25) at UFC 219 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Sidelined for more than a year due to a USADA violation, Nicolau made up for lost time by battering an overmatched Smolka. The Brazilian landed three knockdowns, three takedowns, and was in firm control the entire way. The only blemish of an otherwise flawless performance was the fact that Nicolau seemed to slow down considerably during the second half of the fight. If he can that issue straightened out, he is a forced to be reckoned with in a thin flyweight division.

Fantasy AnalysisNicolau has been suspended since testing positive for anastrozole prior to his matchup with Yuta Sasaki in November last year. Since then, the former bantamweight has served his time and is set to get back into the Octagon. The Brazilian was riding a five-fight winning streak including a split decision victory over John Moraga prior to his suspension. Nicolau is 12-1 overall (2-0 UFC).
Fantasy AnalysisNicolau was scheduled to fight Ukla Saskai on Nov. 19 in Sao Paolo, but UFC is working to find a replacement for him. UFC reported a potential doping violation on an Oct. 13 sample, leading to the provisional suspension. Nicolau had scored two straight victories.
Fantasy AnalysisNicolau started fast in his UFC debut, but he had a lousy second round before picking up the pace in round three. The finish came when Korea suddenly left his neck exposed after a rather dull exchange on the ground and the fight was over moments later. All in all, it was a pretty nice UFC debut for the young Brazilian.
