Please Note:  The rankings below were determined during the preseason and intended for use in drafts leading up to the season.

1. Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos run a 3-4 base defense coordinated by Joe Woods.

Led by OLB Von Miller and the NFL's best cornerback group, Denver should be just fine without DeMarcus Ware, who only had four sacks in his final season while losing snaps to 2015 first-round pick Shane Ray (eight sacks). Last offseason's post-Super Bowl exodus contributed to a No. 28 ranking against the run, but Miller and Co. more than made up for it by surrendering the fewest passing yards and lowest QB rating in the league. While this defense isn't loaded top-to-bottom the way it was a couple years ago, only Seattle boasts a larger collection of proven elite performers.

2. Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks run a 4-3 base defense coordinated by Kris Richard.

The 2016 Seahawks showcased the importance of luck for D/ST units, as they finished third in both points allowed and sacks, but tumbled outside the fantasy top 10 due to a flukish lack of takeaways and TDs. Seattle finished no lower than No. 7 among D/ST units each of the previous five seasons, and given that the group remained elite in non-fantasy terms, a return to previous heights is likely. CB Richard Sherman is back, at least for one more season, joined by FS Earl Thomas, SS Kam Chancellor, LBs Bobby Wagner and K.J Wright and DEs Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Frank Clark.
